Well known character actor Jan Rubes joined Due South in its third season as the eccentric coroner, Dr. Mort Gustafson, who delights in singing opera while performing his grisly job.
Born in Volyne, Czechoslovakia, Jan Rubes graduated from the Prague Conversatory of Music in 1945. After that, he attained the achievement of becoming the youngest basso at the Prague Opera House. In the new few years, he played the leading role at the opera house in Pilsen. In 1948, he was selected to represent Czechoslovakia at the International Music Festival in Geneva. He was awarded first prize.
On December 31, 1948, Rubes immigrated to Canada to pursue musical opportunities. He maintained a long association with the Canadian Opera Company, singing roles such as Boris in Boris Godunov, Schigolch in Lulu, and Mephisto in Faust. He also served as the director of touring and program development.
He appeared in the Vancouver Festival in 1958, playing opposite Joan Sutherland in Don Giovanni. In 1975, he appeared at the Stratford Festival´s Third Stage, directing plays such The Fool by Harry Somers and Richard Strauss´ Adriane Auf Naxos.
Rubes spent a decade as the singing narrator of the radio program Songs of My People. From 1975-83, he was the writer and host of TVOntario´s Guess What?. Although music is his first love in life, he has become well noted as an actor, appearing in highly acclaimed TV productions such as The Day My Grandad Died (1977) and Charlie Grant´s War. He received the Earle Grey Award for lifetime work in Canadian television for his role in 1990´s The Two Men.
Many viewers know him for the stern Amish patriarch in the Harrison Ford film, Witness, but he has done many others, including One Magic Christmas, Dead of Winter, The Outside Chance of Maximillian Glick, and Class Action. He also appeared in many TV series, such as Side Effects, E.N.G. and The X-Files, to name a few.
Rubes continues to keep his hand in theatre work as well. He translated and played the lead role in the 1978 production of The Lost Fairy Tale at the Young People´s Theatre in Toronto. He has played major roles in musicals such as Man of La Mancha, The Sound of Music and South Pacific.
